Teaching Philosophy
My dance training began in a studio setting and from there evolved into a higher education academic study. Throughout my journey I have gathered knowledge and reflected on personal experiences that guided me into cultivating a philosophy of my own. First and foremost, I believe there is no hierarchy in movement genres. I believe that movement and dance is a tool for individuals to deepen their understanding of the body, as well as further one’s meaning of mind, body, and soul connectivity. As a teacher and mentor, I prioritize providing a space for developing dancers to feel supported and secure. Within this constructed container, I find it vital to establish mutual respect and support within a community setting, instill proper classroom etiquette, practice mindfulness, and cultivate creativity.
Exploring movement through dance provides the space for discipline, concentration, and commitment to take shape. I strive to guide dancers to proficiency using space, rhythm, time, and body. In addition to strong technique, I promote discovery and exploration of physical, energetic, and emotional presence. By synthesizing components of community support and student engagement, I encourage dialogue about dancer’s personal discoveries into classroom settings. This is intended to further facilitate a sense of community as well as foster and encourage individual voice. I view each student as an individual and intend to honor their own exploration while redefining what is “successful.” Ultimately, I find great value in molding thoughtful dancers of integrity who know how to gracefully engage with one another and the dance community.
Best,
Lizzie
